How to split the cost of a ski trip

A ski trip has two kinds of costs. Some everyone shares, like the cabin and the groceries. Others depend on the person: not everyone skis every day, and some people bring their own gear.

Enter your own prices below. The calculator splits the shared costs evenly and adds lift tickets and rentals only for the people who need them.

Now collect it: one link, see who's paid, both sides confirm.

In the tab, you can also

  • Add every other expense as it happens: dinners, drinks, rides.
  • Split each one evenly, by exact amounts, or leave people out.
  • Rename it, add people, or change anything later.

Shared costs: split by everyone

Lodging, groceries and anything bought for the whole group split evenly among everyone on the trip, skiing or not.

Personal costs: paid by the person

Lift tickets and rentals are usually bought per person. If one person buys them for the group, add each as its own expense split among the people it was for. Leaving non-skiers out of lift tickets is an easy fairness fix.

Use your real prices

Lift ticket and rental prices vary a lot by resort, date and how far ahead you buy. Check the resort's own site for your dates and enter those numbers.

Keep the trip on one tab

Turn the result into a tab and the shared lodging and food are added for you. Add lift tickets and rentals for the people they're for, and GroupTab works out a short list of payments at the end.

GroupTab keeps everyone's Venmo and Cash App in the tab, so paying is one tap with the amount already filled in, and both sides confirm when it arrives.

Questions

Should non-skiers pay for lift tickets?

No. Lift tickets are personal. Split them only among the people who ski, or have each person buy their own.

How do we split groceries if some people eat out more?

A simple approach: split groceries evenly and add meals out as they happen. Add each dinner to the tab with the people who were there.

What if someone leaves a day early?

Split the lodging by nights instead. The split by nights calculator does that math.
